Paranoid Park
Gus Van Sant's Paranoid Park is a bit like an hour and a half music video. A lot of MTVish camera movements, shades and light filters. Outfits as well - sofisticatedly decadent. Language - simple and sort of infantile, which is nice and consistent with the main character's narratorial voice, but seems overdone at times if you look at the script as a whole. All in all, it has some beautifully filmed parts, it's often a pleasure to watch, but I feel the plot is rather thin and the script could do more working. Elephant was a lot better and touching upon the same atmosphere. Not to mention Good Will Hunting. Its best part is probably that it describes the undescribable chagrin of teenagehood. I would have loved to see it 10 years ago.
